Open to the public and family-friendly, the Fourth Annual ‘Wright State Veteran and Military Alumni Society’ March Madness Cornhole Tournament will be held on March 22, 2025 at AMVETS Post 464 in Dayton, Ohio. Doors open at 11:15 AM for check-in and the tournament briefing will begin at 12 PM. Register as a player or as a spectator with the cost of registration including lunch, drink tickets, raffle tickets, and more.

Teams are guaranteed at least two games with their registration. Play will continue until the first round of the losers bracket has been filled, at that time we will take a break to draw raffle items which will ensure the first round of teams eliminated can leave at their leisure. This event is family-friendly and we will have games and cards available for spectators or players between games. Check out last year’s event to get an idea of what to expect.

Are you a VMAS member? If so, let us know during registration and you will get additional raffle tickets during check-in. Not a member yet? There is NO COST and Wright State / Military affiliation is NOT required! Visit our membership page to see which type you qualify for. Want to learn more? Our team meets every Wednesday at 7 PM on Google Meet and the link is open and available on our website for visitors and members to join us.

Tournament Format:

  • 30 team, double-elimination. Team seeds will be drawn at random to determine bracket position.

  • Five sets of boards will be used for each tournament round.

Tournament Schedule:

  • First round of games begins at 12:10 PM.

  • Games limited to 20 minutes maximum, with games continuing as boards become available.

  • The final game will begin approximately four hours after the tournament begins.

Tournament Rules: We will follow the American Cornhole Organization (ACO) ‘Simple Backyard Rules’ which are outlined below. Learn more about the ACO by visiting americancornhole.com

  • Boards are placed 27 feet from front edge to front edge (spacing may be reduced due to facility limitations).

  • Games are played to 21 or more points. (no bust)

  • Woody: Refers to any cornhole bag that has been pitched and remains on the cornhole board playing surface at the conclusion of the frame. Each woody is 1pt.

  • Cornhole: Refers to any cornhole bag that has been pitched and passes through the cornhole board hole at any time within the frame. Each cornhole is 3pts.

  • A bag that comes to rest touching the ground AND the board does not count as a point.

  • Cancellation Scoring: The approved method of scoring for the sport of cornhole is “cancellation” scoring.  In cancellation scoring, the points of one player cancel out the points of their opponent.  Using this method, only one player/team can score in each frame.

  • Both players play one board at a time and stay in their designated lane for the whole game (right or left).

  • Players start the game at one board and alternate pitching bags until each player has pitched all (4) of their bags.

  • Players must deliver the bag with an underhanded release.

  • Feet must stay behind the line of the front of the board at the time of releasing the bag.

  • The team who scored in the preceding frame pitches first in the next frame.  If neither team scores, the team who pitched first in the preceding frame shall retain first pitch in the next frame.

  • If bags become piled inside the hole and may interfere or obstruct with the next pitch or if there is question whether a cornhole bag would have naturally fallen through the hole, a player may request to rake the cornhole bags that have fallen inside the hole.
