It was our first year hosting the event at AMVETS Post 464 and there was MORE than enough space for our tournament. The event began in the front room as we checked guests in and moved to the back room for tournament play. Guests this year were invited to also enjoy the gambling machines and other amenities like pool and darts at the post.
After about 2 hours of play, we took a break to draw for this year's raffle items. We got a lot of positive feedback on this year's options, with the funds raised from our raffle beating numbers from prior years. Raffle options included:
Tickets to see Comedian Nate Bargatze
Cincinnati Reds Tickets
Cincinnati Zoo Tickets
Ohio State Fair Tickets
Dayton Dragons Tickets
Carillon Park Tickets
Free Team Entry into the VMAS Golf Outing
and plenty of gift cards, bourbon, and other prizes.
After the raffle draw, teams that were eliminated were able to leave at their leisure while the tournament continued on. After about four hours of play we wrapped up the tournament and awarded the top three teams with prizes including VMAS coins, VMAS Bottle Breachers, VMAS thermoses, as well as gift cards to Roosters and City BBQ. First place is pictured on the left, second in the center, and third on the right.
In the end we saw a 20% growth in teams this year, but less spectators left the overall guest count about the same as last year. We were able to increase the amount of funds raised this year by 15%, which will help us support multiple Vet/Mil initiatives on and off campus. The newest initiative is our 'Vet/Mil Alumni Legacy' endowment, which will give students who use federal vet/mil benefits the opportunity to have a dog tag made and hung at the Captain Shawn L. English Champion Garden upon their graduation. These students can choose to honor a parent, spouse, supporter, or use this opportunity to leave their own name on a local memorial dedicated to honoring Veterans, Service Members, and those who support - or Champion - their success.
Lastly, we can't thank the AMVETS team enough for all their help with this year's event. The AMVETS team cooked over 60 meals and poured more than 130 cold drinks for our guests. Another big thanks to the members of the AMVETS Post who host the post's weekly cornhole tournament, as they were kind enough to support us this year by running tournament play through their digital bracketing and scoring system. With their support and the support of our sponsors the Fourth Annual VMAS Cornhole Tournament was another success!! Keep an eye out for next year's event, which will be pushed in April based on feedback from our past guests.
