Jared Shank | Member Highlight

Meet Jared Shank, Wright State Alumni and member of VMAS. He served with the 3-319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment with the 82nd Airborne Division and did one tour of duty in Afghanistan. Jared attended Wright State University after his tour in Afghanistan.

Life After the Military

Jared grew up just outside of St. Paris, Ohio, and now lives in Beavercreek with his family.

For fun, Jared is usually out doing something history-related. In the last couple of years, he has restored a WW1 artillery piece for St. Paris's war memorial and he’s led Civil War cemetery walks in St. Paris as well. Jared also competes in the North-South Skirmish Association, which is a competition shooting using civil war era weaponry. He enjoys conducting historical and genealogical research, especially military research!

It has been interesting, to say the least careerwise for Jared. He intended to use his degrees for historical research/archaeological applications. However, an opportunity presented itself to help veterans in higher education better articulate military training, coursework, and experience into college credit. So now, he works as the Senior Director of Military and Apprenticeship Initiatives and Special Projects at the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Member of VMAS

Jared heard about the Veteran and Military Alumni Society at its creation. He’s always interested in helping fellow veterans, especially those attending Wright State University. He likes to stay in the know about what is going on and volunteer to help where he can. His goal is to see this organization grow and influence more veterans and service members at Wright State and the surrounding Dayton area.

If you are interested in joining VMAS to volunteer with Jared or want to find other opportunities within our organization, please email us at wrightstatevmas@gmail.com
